Hey Vancouver, what are you doing on Monday? Nothing, probably.
Tuesday?
Same, I bet.
Well you should come down to Havana (the theatre, not the Cuban capital) for the 4th Anniversary show of that kooky sketch comedy group, Idle Minds:
Turning four is a pretty big deal – my niece just turned four and now she’s a chef with her own cafe in the backyard – so come celebrate with some good ole’ dick jokes and local comedic talent. There are two shows so there’s no excuse this time!
Idle Minds are back! With a new live sketch comedy show!
It’s called “Bacon Fat” for some reason!
Anyway, the point is Idle Minds Sketch Comedy has returned after a brief hiatus for more fart jokes, bacon-related humour (I’m guessing) and men-dressed-as-ladies/ladies-dressed-as-men!
It has been too long and I’m very excited. Plus, I live with a vegetarian and don’t eat much bacon anymore so that will be nice too. (I’m assuming we all get bacon.)
Check out the show on July 21 at Studio 1398 on Granville Island (or just look at the poster above, duh). Ten bucks at the door and bacon all around! (I’m just guessing.)
Christmas time is here!
And Idle Minds Sketch Comedy sure know it.
They’ve been writing and rehearsing all kinds of new sketches for all the good girls and boys this holiday season!
And, they want to share it with all of you! Whether you are naughty or nice!
There will probably be more naughty than nice, truth be told, so don’t be surprised to see or hear a dick joke or two.
Just sayin’.
Dec 19, Anza Club, Vancouver.
A measly $15.00 or $12.00 if you bring a food bank donation, which you will because why wouldn’t you. Bring two even, to make up for the rest of the year when you don’t donate anything, you selfish so-and-so.
Doors at 7:30, show at 8:00.
Guess what?! Our old sketchy pals Idle Minds are turning 2!
And they want you to celebrate with them on June 24 at the Anza Club! You should go and laugh and feel a little dirty!
I will be going.
You should be going.
It’s always a fun show and Mad Men will be over by then so you won’t be doing anything Sunday night anyway.
It’s spring and all throughout the natural world, hormones are a-flarin’ and temperatures are a-risin’.
Birds and bees are fornicating somehow for some reason and cheeks are flushing on the faces of hot blooded creates near and far.
Which means that they are bursting with untempered enthusiasm, ready to show off their spring plumage, at their spring show, Funny All Over Your Face.
And you know what? There is no excuse to miss it because there are two shows this time around.
Two I say!
Sync your palm pilots, people, for Sunday April 15, 8:00pm ANDMonday April 16, 8:00pm at Havana theatre, Commercial Drive Tickets are $10 at the door, $7 with a drink purchase. As if you wouldn’t get a drink.
So come out and support your local dick joke sketch comedy team. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll support a hilarious group of wildly talented writers, actors, film nerds, and part-time bartenders.
Christmas is better than cheeseburgers. I think that’s the point they’re trying to make.
Right?
Either way, the Idle Minds crew are at it again, just in time for Christmas. You should go enjoy some good sketch comedy – I can almost guarantee there will be a dick joke of some kind as well as a mildly offensive bit about Santa. Like him being beaten by a cheeseburger, for example. You’ll enjoy it. Bring the kids.
It’s happening at the Anza Club on Dec 18, doors open at 7:30, show starts at 8:00. Fifteen bucks will get you in but if you bring a food bank item, it’ll only cost 10. See above poster. Cheeseburgers, with or without bacon, do not count.
Turns out I live in a city with a thriving film community.
Anyone remember Danger Bay?
Exactly.
Last weekend, Vancouver hosted the annual Bloodshots 2011 48-Hour Horror Filmmaking Challenge. Dozens of filmmakers, writers, actors, directors, cameramen, and espresso machines got to work to write, perform, edit, and caffeinate a short horror film in 48 hours. Pretty great.
One such terrifying entry was submitted by some familiar faces to the suite, including alumni from the Idle Minds crew as well as the Bob and Andrew crew:
Check out and vote for their submission here so they can win back some of the money they spent on coffee for 2 straight days of awakeness, as well as pay back their time and efforts, all of which are volunteer because they love what they do. Personally, I would have liked to have seen more use of the word ‘spooktacular’ but it’s possible they are slightly more high-brow than I.
Check out other submissions and well as some more info about the challenge here, if you are not a scaredy-cat.
Check out the screenings at the Rio theatre on Broadway in Vancouver on Thursday, Oct 27, if you can handle the fear. And blood. There’s probably going to be a lot of blood.
And don’t forget to vote!
Also, don’t forget the Idle Minds show this Sunday at the Media Club in Vancouver!
I will be going! You should too! Probably lots of the hilarious people in this spooktacular short film will also be going! It’s going to be funny and, dare I say, spooktacular!
Guess what!? Those crazy kids at Idle Minds are getting together for more hilarity! Just in time for Halloween! Literally!
Check the details on this tiny poster (Oct 30, Doors 8:00, Show 8:30, $10.00, Media Club) and definitely go there! You won’t be doing anything else that night anyway because it’s the night before Halloween but the night after you celebrate Halloween by dressing up like a slutty nurse or that guy from Breaking Bad that you have to explain to everyone because you just look like a guy in glasses! So you’re good!
Sunday night was awesome. I had the pleasure of enjoying some of the funniest, most crude, most well-written, most hilariously-performed, most enthusiastic sketch comedy around.
Idle Minds is a group of twisted individuals born out of the Vancouver Film School writing department. And they put on an awesome show – with jokes! on Sunday night at the Media Club.
And it was PACKED! standing room only! which is always a good sign.
This was the third time I’d seen the Idle crew and methinks it was my favourite one to date. It could be because I’ve been able to get to know some of the writers and performers; it could be because the energy in the room was so terrific; it could be that they work onstage together so well; it could be that I take Parking Enforcement very seriously; it could be Tapper’s Australian accent and rippling pectoral muscles. It could be that it was just a really fun show.
Either way, it was great.
Every couple of months they perform a new, original show and I highly suggest you check it out if you are in Vancouver. Chances are I’ll let you know of an upcoming show right here at the Suite so stay tuned. I’m thinking June-ish?
On a semi-unrelated note, check out The Bob and Andrew Show – a really funny web series by some more of the VFS writers’ alumni. There’s also lots of tidbits at www.bobandandrew.com so go there and be amused.
