pipe dream theatre presents: cabaret!

Where have I been?!

Toronto.

For work.

And then I tried this new weight loss program called “Food Poisoning” and it really took a lot of out me. I actually don’t recommend it.

But I am back and I am really excited for this week because:
a) I don’t have food poisoning anymore
b) don’t get food poisoning
c) I got some fresh Seigel’s Bagels for lunch, and,
d) I am going to see a production of Cabaret! this week!

My old pals at Pipedream Theatre are putting on the classic musical that centres on Cliff Bradshaw, an American writer in search of inspiration in Berlin at the start of the 1930s. He befriends Sally Bowles, a British night club performer, and the two enjoy the hedonism and creative freedom of the last days of the Golden Age of the Weimar Germany. As the Nazi party grows stronger, however, they must decide whether the future of Berlin is something they can face. (I didn’t write that part, I got it from the show’s Facebook page where all the info is!)

I’m really excited about this show because, and I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I’ve never seen it before. So I’m really pumped Pipedream is putting it on because my friend is directing it, my other friend is producing it, and my friend Evan helped out with the costumes! Ha za!

April 9th to 19th at Performance Works Theatre on Granville Island.

Tickets are $35 and $25 at www.vancouvertix.com.
They’re also available by phone at 604-629-VTIX or in person at the Arts Club Granville Island Box Office at
1585 Johnston Street on Granville Island.

Cheers.

outings; plan b

Last weekend, to celebrate my very good friend’s birthday, also Canada’s, myself and four handsome fellas hiked into the unknown North-ish of Pemberton. Our Plan A (Lake Lovely Water) fell through because our yacht was having the leather treated and the chrome polished so we had to proceed elsewhere on foot instead.

Ain’t no thang.

I’m a bit reluctant to tell you where it was because I don’t want a lot of people to be there the next time I go. But I’ll give you a hint: it was Tenquille Lake. But don’t tell anyone.

The whole trek was beautiful and sunny and lovely and so many goddamn bugs it’ll be a miracle if I ever pee in the woods again. But those four dudes and I had a wonderful time making dick jokes, not catching fish, and talking ’bout farts.
Can’t wait to do it again.
Here’s brief sample of how it looked:

You guys, it was great. And the scout hat played an integral role in sun repellency and radness, just sayin’.

Thanks to those handsome fellas who protected me from countless lurking grizzly bears by laughing loud enough to scare them away and here’s to a hap-hap-happy birthday to Mr. AW.
Hugs all around.

Cheers.

go do this; assassins

Assassins_indigogo-1

When my talented friend Keith of Pipedream theatre asked me to take a look at their newest project in the works I said, “of course!” because the last time they asked me to look at their newest project, it was for CAPSLOCK: The Musical which ended up being the Pick of the Fringe here in Vancouver.
So they do good work, is what I’m saying.

So when he asked me to look over their newest project, Steven Sondheim’s “Assassins” I didn’t know what to expect, not being familiar with the Tony Award-winning musical.

The press release had me at “murderous carnival game.”

And this is a musical? I’m intrigued.

The show presents a revue-style portrayal of nine men and women who have attempted or succeeded in assassinating a US President. Various historical periods get ignored and pushed around as the assassins interact and inspire each other in their murderous attempts to fulfill the American Dream. Oringinal songs in styles from various eras provide the soundtrack.

Sounds fun!

The show reunites some Pipedream alumni with newcomers to the company while examining a variety of social issues including violence, mental health, and gun control in this award-winning musical. Brought to you in Vancouver, people! Go do this!

I’m excited.

The show opens on April 4 at:
Performance Works
1218 Cartwright Street, Granville Island,
from April 3-13, 2013 at 8pm and 2pm matinees Saturday & Sunday.
PREVIEW: Wednesday, April 3 at 8pm
OPENING NIGHT: Thursday, April 4 at 8pm

Tickets are $35, $25 student/senior/preview/matinee.
Box Office: www.VancouverTix.com

wool on wolves in vancouver; go to this show.

November 17, Biltmore Cabaret, Vancouver, go to this show.

Wool On Wolves is not just a clever name, they are a collection of talented multi-instrumentalist singers and songwriters from Edmonton, AB, where I was first introduced to them during my stint in E-Town. If you like music with great lyrics, a great rock’n’roll-guitar-plaid-flannel-wearing-ski-bum-keyboard-and-harmonica-type sound, you will enjoy this band and you will enjoy seeing them play live.

At the Biltmore Cabaret, in Vancouver, on November 17.
Tickets are available at ticket master here.

You guys, I’m serious. These handsome, fuzzy-faced gentlemen are going to make you want to both learn how to play guitar and probably sleep with at least two of them by the end of the show because they are talented songwriters, they are terrific musicians, and they are nice to look at. They are also the kind of band that in five years you’re going to be pumped to be able to say “I saw them play at the Biltmore back in 2012! And I tried to make out with one of them! The fuzzy one!” And everyone will know what you are talking about except for the last part because it could apply to anyone in the band.

So get a ticket and go to the show. Maybe don’t try the make-out thing but you are probably going to want to make out with someone afterwards, it’s going to make you feel that good.

If you are not in Vancouver, there are other places you can see them play too; check their tour dates at their website and take a peek around to learn more about them.

Don’t believe me? Check out their (really, really pretty) video for their newest release “Midnight Avenue” from their upcoming album Measures Of Progress right now:

See you there!

Cheers.

outings; vancouver flea market

Last week I had a day off from my new big girl job (in addition to my other part-time job) so I went to the flea market to look for a pair of racing ski pole grips. Old school style. I’d never been to the flea market so I figured it was worth a shot.

No luck on the grips but if you want an old watch, an old tool, a cell phone case, or a my little pony, I know a place.

I won’t be able to post as much as I was able to before because I am working quite a bit these days and don’t have much down time. Life is good!

Cheers.

outings; nigel pass

I very recently got a nephew for the first time so a trip home for a visit was obviously in order.

While he is lovely and adorable and soft and quiet and well-behaved and very advanced, newborn babies are pretty boring. While I absolutely could sit with him all day and just watch him make weird faces, there are better ways to spend a few hours in the day in the Rockies. One of the best is a good hike.

Like Nigel Pass! Just off the Icefields Parkway. I insist you try it. Even the drive there is extraordinary.

Welcome to Paradise, Nephew.

Cheers.

outings; mt seymour, first peak

Guess what I did yesterday? I went for my first hike of the season! Ha za!

It was brilliant hiking weather, not too hot, not too cold, and except for the bugs, it was a delight.
Well, it was a delight to be out in the mountains at all, but the bugs were very annoying.

Looking forward to more this season. Any recommendations around Vancouver/Lower Mainland?

in transit; bronze statues, queen elizabeth park

On Saturday, miracle of miracles, I was able to give myself a full day off, guilt-free, to spent with a handsome fella. And it was beautiful out! horribly cold and rainy, of course, so we did a bit of a Vancouver driving tour.

You guys, it was great. I love going for drives.

One of the places we hit up was the Queen Elizabeth Park, which was totally beautiful and full of gorgeous flowers that, had it been sunny out, we would have been able to see.

There was also a great set of statues at the very top lookout overlooking the whole city.
I snapped a few pics:

Cheers.

outings; ladies poker night

I very recently started playing poker.
What I mean is, I played poker one time the other night with a group of girls who also don’t really play poker but want to learn in a safe environment. Solution? Girls Poker Night.

All you need is Jamesons!
Also cards and chips and a table. Tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole also good.

outings; costume warehouse

Yesterday I went on a field trip for my styling class.
Field trips are fun. This one was no exception.

Let me preface by saying 2 things:
1) Vancouver has a huge film industry and thus a huge costume and prop warehouse in which to store costumes and props for said film industry. Thanks, The X-Files.
2) I’ve always been mildly obsessed with vintage clothes, vintage accessories, vintage shops, and the rifling through all of these things.

I think you see where I’m going with this.
We went to a huge warehouse full of clothes, vintage and otherwise, and spent a couple hours rifling.

You guys, it was so great. See?

Cheers.
